2024 Tree Care
We have some new as well as some old pest problems that will affect our trees this year.
The 17-year Cicadas are about to emerge in force and live out their life cycles. They can cause damage to certain trees that are not well established as well as trees with existing disease problems that might spread due to the damage that cicadas cause. We can fertilize and directly treat these trees or shrubs to give you protection from this damage.
The Spotted Lanternfly is a new pest for our area. It is a foliage feeder found on a range of host plants including many of high economic importance (including grapes, hops, stone fruits, apples), as well as oak, walnut, tulip tree, willow, and maple trees. The insect will be on different hosts at different times in its life cycle. We have options for treatment of these pests if they decide to make your tree their home.
We keep seeing Borers of different types in Spruce and Pine trees. White Pine Weevils kill the tops of these evergreens. Zimmerman Pine Moths and Pine Bark Beetles bore into the trunk and tunnel underneath the surface causing unseen damage. Both of these problems are treatable with our Trunk Injection Insecticide. Infested and damaged branches are removed so that the trees can recover quickly.
Pine Wilt Disease is responsible much of the time for killing one Pine tree after the next where plantings are relatively close together. This disease is delivered to the trees by a beetle that comes from infected trees with the disease on their bodies. Keeping your trees health in in the first place is job one for winning against this disease. When we find it on your property we treat all Pines nearby with a trunk injected insecticide to stop the continued spread of this pest.
Pear trees have been getting destroyed by Fire Blight on our area and require treatment as well as removing the diseased branches from the trees. We have had some good success in treating this disease and helping trees to recover although it takes a few treatment cycles and continued trimming to remove diseased branches.

Both diseases are destroying Austrian and Scotch Pines in our area. Don't wait to do something about it. Tree removal and replacement gets very expensive. We have a Trunk Injection that can successfully treat these problems to save your Pine trees.
If it seems like your trees are not responding using standard fertilizer year after year, you might need to have a Soil Test. By testing the content of the soil, we can find out the actual levels of nutrients. Having too much or too little of any nutrient can limit or even injure plants and turf. Using the laboratory recommendations, we will know exactly how much to apply and what formulation we should use.
